Macintosh Internet Setup

What you’re looking at...
These are the more important windows.
Using Free PPP and MacOS 7.5.3+ and almost any "current" version of MacTCP. When you install FreePPP, it mostly auto-configures everything.
The graphic below is of the first window in Mac TCP. Make sure it’s set for "Free PPP" at the top. Then Click "More."

next screen

If the gateway is "greyed out" and you can’t change it’s address then you have to click the "manual" radio button under "obtain address." Then you can change your gateway address. Then click "obtain" back to "server."
You’ll have to make sure that it’s set to "Class C" and the 192.0.0.0 set up... sometimes it reverts back to class A when you play with the "obtain" options.
Once done, click okay and close Mac TCP.
Moving on to FreePPP, as I said it usually auto configures itself.
In the opening window. Click on the "Modem Tab."
Your modem should be highlighted. Click "edit."
fp3open.jpg (52098 bytes)
This should then take you to the FP3Config.jpg" window.
FP3Mconfig.jpg (49010 bytes)
Make sure that these configurations match. If the Port Speed is too fast it tends to crash and if it is too slow it tends have downloads that crawl.

Note: For older Macs 60830 and less the port speed may have to be at 38,400 bps. Also check the init string. Usually on auto set-up it tacks on more to the "AT&F1."

As a final check the IP addys under FreePPP too. From the opening window click on the "Accounts Tab." Then click on "Edit." Then Click on the "Options Tab." This should give you a window that looks like the window below.
FP3IPAddys.jpg (33469 bytes)
Click okay. Close out FreePPP. Then to make sure... "restart" the Macintosh. Wait for it to load up everything. Then if everything is going smoothly, you should be able to open "FreePPP" click the "connect" button and be able to surf the net.
