Go to the Control Panel as pictured below.
Click the Start button
and the options will pop-up.
Click on the part that says "Control
Panel."
Click on Network and Internet Connections to get to the
XP Connection Wizard.
Choose the create a connection option or click on Network Connections.
This tutorial assumes that you are choosing the Network Connections
option. If not, skip down to the New Connection Wizard picture
a little further down.
From this screen, simply click on Create New Connection.
Make sure to delete any unused connections so that they don't confuse
any of your programs that are used to using that old connection.
This will bring up the New Connection Manager.
Click the Next button on the first screen below.
This screen asks you to select a connection type. Even if
you are doing a DSL connection, select Connect to the Internet and
click Next.
Choose "Set up my connection manually".
Click Next.
Click to choose the Connect using a dial-up
modem option then click next. Note: This tutorial does not
cover broadband DSL connections.
Click Next.
Name the connection Grand Valley Telecommunications then
click Next.
This is where we plug-in the "POP number" that is your local
connection number for Grand Valley Telecommunications. Be sure to
include the area code if your area uses 10-digit dialing where you
have to include the area code even for local calls. You can find
your local number by clicking on the Numbers on this site.
Click Next to continue.
Generally, you want to choose the Anyone's Use selection
then click Next.
Put in your username and password to connect to Grand
Valley Telecommunications.
Putting a checkmark in the first box is generally preferred.
It helps your programs such as Internet Explorer and Outlook
Express to connect automatically without human directive.
A checkmark in the second box for the default
Internet connection is strongly encouraged unless you connect to
more than one ISP on a regular basis.
The last one is optional. Using the Internet
Connection Firewall can, occasionally, cause problems accessing
some web sites and services..from connecting to most ISPs. Click
Next when finished.
The next screen is a confirmation of the connection. A
handy feature is the checkbox for adding a shortcut to your desktop.
If you want to do that then click to add a checkmark to that box.
Don't forget that you will still need to open your e-mail program
to do e-mail and your browser (such as Internet Explorer or Netscape)
to go surfing on the Web. Click Finish and you are ready to connect
to the Internet.
